Wing Commander: Armada is Origin's answer to the wishes of many Wing Commander fans: the blend of multi-player head-to-head action and strategic elements in the race to conquer the galaxy. The game could be played either in split-screen, network, serial or modem modes and was one of the first multi-player 3D space sims. This game also featured multi-player support both in Quick play and Armada modes. This game provided 2 distinct modes of play with Armada being entirely tactically based and a far easier quick play method much like the mission creation facilities of Chuck Yegar's Air Combat of 5 years previous. This game sees you in command of either the Terran or Kilrathi empires in a bid to conquer a sector of space. Using a high speed modem, NetBIOS-compatible network, or a split-screen mode on a single computer, two pilot jockeys can both climb into their own fighter and play head-to-head or cooperatively.Ī strategy game base upon the popular Wing Commander Universe. Most players agree that Armada's strengths lie in it's multiplayer capabilities. This mode more represents a strategy game requiring the player to manage planetary resources and build up a fleet to hunt down and destroy his/her opponent.īattle sequences in "Armada" mode place the player in the cockpit so they can directly affect the outcome of each battle, creating an interesting mix of strategy and action. Not only can the player fly in "Gauntlet" mode, a straight shoot'em-up where wave after wave of increasingly powerful enemy ships challenge your dogfight skills, but a new "Armada" mode is present. As in Wing Commander: Academy, there is no storyline to follow, but several new features not found in previous Wing Commander games are present. THe most recent game I can think of that could be looked at as a sort of unoffical sucessor would be Freelancer, and that's a number of years old itself.Much as Wing Commander: Armada was designed to appeal to those who wanted to be able to create their own missions, the game ultimately became known for those who wanted a multiplayer game set in the Wing Commander universe. In many ways this can be kind of looked at like a precursor to alot of the open world games like GTA though many of those don't have the trading economy or monetary system. ![]() Otherwise I think the depth of gameplay and story rivals much of what is out today. Nowadays the expectation is that the game will explain everything to you when back in the day I'd read through the manuals as soon as I opened the gamebox (Origin used to have the best extras packed in with the game back in the day). It really does need a tutorial though to take you through the first stages of the game. I don't know if GOG's setup does that for you or not. Flying works pretty well with one but the buttonmapping is time consuming to workout. I've had good success mapping the controls to a gamepad though. Not many people have those laying around anymore and it's pretty much impossible to fly mouse in Privateer IIRC. The issue I have with the gameplay though is more that the ideal control is a joystick. I'd argue it doesn't really look better that way though. The low resolution does hurt the game a bit though you can tweak some of the filters in dosbox to smooth it out a bit.
